Tour Highlights
Jeep tour to see wild elephants in Munnar
Tea plantations and... the jeep!
The tea plantations are incredible, but touring them by jeep is…
Awesome!
Wild elephants
For us, seeing wild elephants was the highlight of the trip to India.
A unique spectacle!
Nature
The natural beauty of Munnar is out of this world: breathtaking waterfalls, animals, lots of greenery and lots of water.
The local people
In India, you’ll experience the kindness of the locals firsthand. Their way of life and their smiles will fill you with energy.
The food
Munnar’s food is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted – a blend of new flavors and ingredients.
It’s a perfect opportunity to experience the true taste of India
During our trip to Munnar we booked something a bit different: the Anakulam Wild Elephant Village Tour. If you are looking for an activity in Munnar that mixes wild nature, the tea plantations and the daily life of local villages, this tour is a strong recommendation.
What to do in Munnar?
Our recommendation: Wild Elephant Village Tour
We started the tour at 10:30 in the morning in Munnar. Our guide, Suresh, was waiting for us at the hotel, since transport is included. We travelled by jeep through some genuinely beautiful landscapes until we arrived at the village of Anakulam, a quiet place surrounded by mountains, rivers and plenty of green.
The first stop was a viewpoint where, with some luck, you can spot wild elephants walking freely in the area. We waited there for a while, the silence was striking, and although we did not see them that morning, the place itself is worth the visit.
In the morning we enjoyed the tea fields and the local village
The tour also takes you into the rural life of the village. We walked along terraced fields and chatted with locals, who told us about their traditions and how they live alongside the surrounding nature. We also had the chance to taste local food and drinks prepared in the village itself, which is one of those small details that makes the day feel real, not staged.
Waterfalls in Munnar
Viripara waterfalls and Tiger Cave
Our stop at the Viripara waterfalls was a highlight of the day. We had the chance to swim in the clear water of a waterfall managed by the forestry department, which after a long morning was very welcome. We also visited the famous Tiger Cave, a place with a strong local legend behind it.
Lunch with typical Munnar food
For lunch, our guide took us to an area in Manukam, where we enjoyed a typical food of Munnar Simple yet delicious. We were served traditional dishes prepared by the locals, and it was an experience.
And finally, we saw the wild elephants in Munnar
At the end of the day, as the sun was setting, we returned to Anakulam for one final attempt at spotting the wild elephants. With the orange light on the mountains and the quiet around us, it really felt like the right moment for them to appear. They did not show that day, but the wait at sunset was already worth the trip.
The advantage of taking the best tour of Munnar
Why do we recommend using Munnarinfo?
The agency goes well above what you would expect. We did not get to see the wild elephants at Anakulam that day, but the day after the tour they called us back and took us to another spot in Munnar where we did finally see them. They did not have to do that. It says a lot about how they work, and it turned what could have been a small disappointment into one of the best memories of the trip.
Recommendations
Do it with a reputable agency
Our day at the Anakkulam Wild Elephant Village Tour was one of the experiences that stayed with us from the whole Munnar leg of the trip. The jeep ride gave us access to the authentic rural side of the area and to landscapes that you do not get to see otherwise. Suresh’s patience and his clear interest in showing us the best of Anakkulam made the day flow easily.
The visit to the village, the people we met, the food prepared in their own homes, the Viripara waterfalls and the Tiger Cave were all small pieces of the same picture. Each stop added something different and gave us a more complete sense of the region.
And then, in spite of not seeing the wild elephants on the first day, the agency invested time and effort to fix that. Their dedication to making the experience genuinely good for us is the kind of service that we appreciate the most.
If you are planning a trip to Munnar and you want an activity that pulls together nature, culture and a bit of adventure, the Anakkulam Wild Elephant Village Tour is a solid choice. Trust the people at the agency: they will make the day worth it.
