Get ready for an adventure on the Emerald Isle of the Indian Ocean: Sri Lanka. On our trip, the expert local guide Prasanna led the way (+94 77 418 9345), and the route he put together for us combined culture, nature and relaxation in the right proportions. From the major historical ruins to the quieter beaches of the south, the country covers a lot of ground in a short time.
Below is the 9-day itinerary in Sri Lanka we followed, with the stops we genuinely recommend, the hotels that worked, and the small details that made the trip flow. The structure is built around three full days in the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya), then the train to Ella and the safari in Yala, and finally the southern beaches between Ahangama and Hikkaduwa. It is a route that gives you a fair picture of the country without rushing every leg.
Second stop: Lucky Safari. An authentic Lucky Safari traveling by oxcart and wooden boat. You experience local culture through a traditional meal and learn how rice is prepared, which is more interesting than it sounds when you see it firsthand.
Third stop: Dambulla Temple. Explore the Temple of Dambulla, also known as the Golden Temple. The climb up can be a bit demanding, but the cave murals at the top are worth the effort. The complex contains five caves with hundreds of Buddha statues and frescoes dating back over 2,000 years, and the panoramic view from the top is part of the reward.

Third stop: Dambulla Temple. Explore the Temple of Dambulla, also known as the Golden Temple. The climb can be a bit challenging, but the cave murals at the top justify it. The five caves contain hundreds of Buddha statues and centuries-old frescoes, and the panoramic view across the surrounding countryside is one of the better ones in this part of the country.
Days 2 and 3: From Sigiriya to Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
Morning in Kandy. Head into Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth of Buddha, one of the most sacred sites in the country. The complex is busy but worth navigating, and the rituals you witness are still part of daily local life.
Jewelry Museum. Explore the Jewelry Museum, with its fascinating collection and a small hidden shop that is genuinely a good find.
Tea plantations. Visit a tea plantation on the way out of Kandy. The drive up to Nuwara Eliya is one of the most scenic legs of the entire route.
Train trip to Ella. Enjoy the train journey from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, with spectacular views throughout the ride. The route through the tea hills is one of the things most travellers remember from a 9-day tour of Sri Lanka.
Overnight at Ceylon Tea Trails. In Ella, the Ceylon Tea Trails offers a luxury experience in the heart of the tea plantations. The property is built around restored colonial-era bungalows with full butler service, infinity pools and tea-tasting walks. A solid splurge if the budget allows.
Train trip to Ella. Enjoy the train journey from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, with spectacular views throughout the ride. Allow plenty of time and try to book a window seat in advance.
Two nights at Ceylon Tea Trails. In Ella, the Ceylon Tea Trails offers a luxury experience right in the middle of the tea plantations. The bungalows are elegant and full of period character, the food is excellent, and the daily walks through the estates give the stay genuine substance beyond the comfort of the rooms.
Days 4 and 5: Ella and the Yala safari.
Jungle trail. Explore a jungle trail near Ella that leads to the famous railway bridge with the train passing overhead. The view of the bridge and the surrounding nature is one of the photos you will want to take with time.
Safari in Yala. Take a proper safari in Yala National Park. You will see elephants, leopards (with luck), buffalo, crocodiles and a long list of bird species. Yala is the second-largest park in the country and one of the best places in Asia to spot leopards in the wild.
Two nights at Cinnamon Wild Yala. For a luxury experience near Yala, Cinnamon Wild Yala offers luxurious safari tents and villas overlooking the park. The location lets you do a sunrise safari without a long transfer, the food is excellent, and the service hits the right balance between attentive and unobtrusive. A solid choice if you want comfort without losing the wild feel of the area.
Day 6: Relax in Ahangama and the southern beaches.
Slow day in Ahangama. Arrive at Ahangama and take a proper rest day at the hotel. After a busy first half of the trip, this is where you recharge. The beach is right there, the pace drops, and you can finally read a book.
Dinner at Ceylon Slide. Have dinner at Ceylon Slide, a beach bar known for cocktails and a relaxed atmosphere. The food is genuinely good for a beach bar, and the sunset from the terrace is one of the better ones on the south coast. We ended up staying longer than expected on both nights we went.
Tip: Ahangama and the surrounding stretch (Weligama, Mirissa) is also a strong area for surfing if that is your thing. There are good schools for beginners and consistent waves for the more experienced.
Days 7, 8 and 9: From Hikkaduwa to Colombo.
On the way to Hikkaduwa. Visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda and explore Galle, a picturesque coastal town with serious historical character. The old fort area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photogenic spots of the entire route.
Hikkaduwa: tourist area and beaches. In Hikkaduwa, enjoy the beach and the local shops. The area is busier than Ahangama but still relaxed, and there are several solid spots for snorkeling right off the beach.
Dinner at Sea Salt Society. Have dinner at Sea Salt Society, known for genuinely good food and a relaxed atmosphere. One of the strong spots in the area for a quality evening meal.
Three nights at Taru Villas 906. In Hikkaduwa, Taru Villas 906 offers a private villa with a pool and direct beach access. The service is excellent, the food is consistently good, and the privacy of the villa makes it a perfect base for closing out a 9-day itinerary in Sri Lanka on a high note.
Return to Colombo Finally, head to Colombo to spend the night in a hotel near the airport, preparing for your early flight the next day.
