Experience the thrill of diving in Maafushi with Sinai Dive Club
We chose this dive centre because it is one of the most recognised diving operations in Maafushi, with a 4.9 rating across 211 reviews. Our experience was excellent. From the first briefing, the team stood out for being professional, organised and clear with the safety procedures. We will definitely book with them again.
When to Go Diving in the Maldives
The Maldives are diveable all year round, but the best window for diving in Maafushi is between November and April. The water is calmer, visibility reaches up to 30 metres and the probability of spotting pelagic species is higher. During the southwest monsoon (May to October) the conditions are still good and you can dive without major issues, but visibility drops a bit and there is more chance of changing weather.
The Boat and Equipment: Comfort on Every Dive
The boat used for diving is spacious and well-equipped. There is plenty of room to prepare gear comfortably, and the upper deck is a good spot to rest between dives. The dive equipment is in excellent condition: well-calibrated regulators, wetsuits in good shape and modern BCDs. Everything you need is there, well-maintained and ready.
Shark Tank, what a crazy dive!
The icing on the cake was the famous excursion to Shark Tank near Male.
We dived surrounded by Hundreds of sharks in the Maldives, a true madness not suitable for all hearts.
Maafushi Island: The accessible paradise of the Maldives
Maafushi is one of the most popular islands in the Maldives, probably the most visited local island, and a great destination if you want paradise beaches and serious excursions without spending a fortune. The island combines beauty and culture, and the locals are genuinely welcoming, which makes the stay feel less staged than at a private resort.
From Maafushi you can do guided excursions to the most famous Maldivian atolls, including snorkelling with whale sharks, manta rays and turtles. There are also island-hopping trips to the iconic sandbanks of the area, where the water turns those impossible shades of turquoise that the Maldives are known for.
Below is a summary of the main atolls in the Maldives to give you a sense of where to base yourself:
| Atoll | Accessibility | Accommodation | Main activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaafu (North and South Male) — Maafushi is here | High, speedboats from Male | Hotels, boutique guesthouses, mid-range | Diving, snorkelling, island hopping, water sports |
| Ari Atoll | Medium, speedboat or seaplane | Resorts and a few local islands | Diving with whale sharks and manta rays |
| Baa Atoll | Medium-low, seaplane | Mostly luxury resorts | Hanifaru Bay (mantas), pristine diving |
| Vaavu (Felidhoo) | Medium, speedboat | Local islands and a few resorts | Liveaboard diving, channels |
| Rasdhoo | Low, speedboat | Few hotels, more intimate | Diving with hammerheads, exclusivity |
Each atoll has its own personality. Maafushi works particularly well as a budget-friendly base with strong dive infrastructure within easy reach.
Let us be honest: if you are going on your honeymoon or looking for the high-end Maldives experience, Maafushi may not be your best option. But if you want excursions and activities at reasonable prices while still enjoying an authentic local Maldivian setting, Maafushi is a strong choice. We loved our stay there, and the combination of affordable accommodation, accessible dive sites and short transfers from Male made it one of our favourite islands of the trip.

Cocoa Corner: A Spectacular of Marine Life
Located in the Kandooma Channel, Cocoa Corner delivers one of the more memorable dives of the area. The dive begins on a steep wall full of caves and overhangs, which shelter a wide variety of marine life. The current can be moderate or strong, which adds intensity to the experience and helps spot the pelagic species that come along the wall: reef sharks, tuna, jacks and the occasional eagle ray. A solid dive with a clear identity.
Kandooma Thila: Underwater Adrenaline
Considered one of the most striking dive sites in the atoll, Kandooma Thila is a tear-shaped formation with walls covered in soft coral and a very high concentration of fish. Right from the descent, the current pushed us straight into the action. We encountered grey reef sharks, large schools of fusiliers and the constant cleaning station activity that makes thila dives particularly rewarding. Visibility was excellent on the day we dived it, which made every detail of the formation pop.
Manta Point: Encounter with Ocean Giants
Available only during the southwest monsoon, Manta Point (also known as Manta Block) is a must for anyone interested in manta rays. The small coral block sits at 18 metres and works as a cleaning station for these animals. As soon as we arrived at the site, the mantas were already there, slowly circling above the block while small wrasses cleaned them. We spent the entire dive watching their movement, which is the kind of dive that justifies a trip on its own.
Shark Tank: An Adrenaline Rush
Get ready, you're going to be blown away!
For divers seeking an exciting experience, Shark Tank It offers a close encounter with sharks. At this point, the strong current attracts dozens of reef sharks providing one of the most impactful experiences of the trip.
Go with a club that offers guarantees.
The organization of Sinai Dive Club was impeccable. From the equipment assignment to the detailed pre-dive briefing, the team of instructors and divemasters, especially Alex and Mo They prioritized safety without sacrificing excitement, ensuring an unforgettable immersion experience.
We had never seen so many sharks together.
We were lucky, we were able to see hundreds of spinners, and on that same dive bull sharks, several hammerhead sharks and lemon sharks.
A dream come true, we didn’t know where to look!
A experience worth having
Every dive in Maafushi felt different and full of small surprises. As with our Saudi Arabia expedition, the dive sites lived up to expectations across the week.
One of the strongest dives was at Shark Tank Male. The contrast between the city skyline at the surface and the abundance of marine life below the water is striking. Reef sharks patrolled the area constantly, large groupers held their territory among the rocks, and the variety of smaller marine life was particularly good for photography.
The dive sites we covered in Maafushi were diverse: deep walls in Cocoa Corner, the thila dynamic at Kandooma Thila, the cleaning station at Manta Point, and the urban-meets-wild feel of Shark Tank. Each one added something different to the overall experience.
The dive team kept everything running smoothly throughout the week. The briefings were clear, the dive sites were well-chosen for our level and conditions, and the small details (rinsed gear after each dive, hot drinks back on the boat, careful buddy assignments) gave the operation a solid feel.
If you are looking for diving in the Maldives that combines variety, healthy reefs and good value, Maafushi diving is a serious recommendation. The island gives you the budget side of the Maldives without compromising on the underwater experience.
