Where to stay in Holbox: our favorite hotel

We'll tell you about our experience at Casa Peregrino, a charming centrally located hotel with good Wi-Fi and a jacuzzi overlooking the sea.

Hotel Casa Peregrino Holbox

Holbox, Mexico

Best time to visit Holbox?

We went in May, which is outside the dry season (December to April), and the trip was excellent: long days and clear skies.

From May to November the weather turns more tropical, with afternoon showers that pass quickly and humidity that you feel but get used to.

Between June and October there is also a higher chance of seeing whale sharks in the area, which is one of the strongest arguments for visiting Holbox during the summer months.

And if you love the underwater world, don’t miss the diving in Cozumel just a hop away.

Best areas to stay in Holbox?

You basically have two options. In the centre of Holbox (the option we picked) you have everything right at hand: restaurants, cafés, excursions and the beach just a few steps away. It works for making the most of the island without depending on a transfer. The alternative is the resorts on the far end of the beach, which offer more privacy and a quieter atmosphere, but you have to commute back into town for most things.

We arrived wanting time to slow down, and Holbox delivered. Walking on the white sand of the main beach with the air smelling of sea, everything invites you to slow your pace, to look around more carefully, to speak more slowly. The rhythm of the island itself does most of the work, and we settled into it within hours of arrival.

The essence of the Pilgrim House Hotel

Casa Peregrino opened its doors in December 2020, at a time when the world was, by necessity, asking everyone to stop. Maybe that is why the hotel makes so much sense today.

It is a boutique hotel with all the comforts you would want for a real getaway, but on a small enough scale that it never feels like a chain. The team behind the project clearly cares about what they have built, and the place has a personality you do not find in larger properties on the island.

Casa Peregrino Holbox Facilities

What sets Casa Peregrino apart is not just the design. It is the complete experience: from the moment you arrive, you can tell the place is thoughtfully looked after. The philosophy combines a modern aesthetic with a warm, personal style of service.

Small details add up across a stay: a cold drink the moment you check in, useful tips that match what you actually want to do, recommendations for restaurants that are not on the obvious tourist list. Everything is calibrated for someone who wants a real experience of Holbox, not a generic resort version of it.

If you fall for boutique hotels with soul, the same happened to us in Cozumel with the Illa Hotel in Cozumel.

Sleeping well means living better: this is what bedrooms are like

We stayed in the suite with kitchen and balcony, and honestly, we had everything we needed. Spacious, bright, with a bed so comfortable it was hard to get up in the morning (although the coffee downstairs helped). We had a small but functional kitchen with a fridge, microwave and a stove for the times we wanted to eat in or prepare a quick breakfast before an early excursion.

The balcony was one of the best surprises. It looks out over a quiet part of the centre, with enough greenery to feel removed from the street and enough light in the mornings to make it the natural spot for coffee. The bathroom was modern, the air conditioning worked silently, and the wifi was strong enough to work from the room if we needed to. For three nights in Holbox, the suite was the right call.

The jewel of the hotel is on the roof: Jacuzzi in Holbox

The rooftop of Casa Peregrino is one of those spots that takes you a couple of steps out of the world. Heading up there in the late afternoon, with a cold beer in hand and nothing on the schedule, is genuinely one of the small luxuries of the stay. The outdoor jacuzzi is a strong reason to come up at sunset, when the sky turns and the heat of the day finally drops.

We ended up there every evening of the stay, sometimes with the rest of the group, sometimes by ourselves.

Waking up to the smell of (good) coffee

One of the biggest surprises of the stay was breakfast. Right below the hotel is Clandestino, probably the most loved café among locals and travellers in Holbox. We went every morning and took our time over toast, eggs and tropical fruit. The coffee is excellent (something you cannot take for granted in this part of Mexico), the bread is freshly baked, and the menu has enough variety to keep three or four mornings interesting.

What makes Clandestino work is not just the food. The atmosphere is exactly the right kind of relaxed: locals having a coffee before work, travellers planning the day, a few people working from a laptop. The kind of place where you sit down for breakfast and end up still there an hour later, with no rush to leave.

Who is Casa Peregrino for?

We went as a group of friends and the format worked perfectly. But we also saw solo travellers with laptops in hand, working from the terrace or the café. There is good wifi, good rest and good energy across the whole place. Casa Peregrino is a comfortable, well-laid-out space for anyone visiting Holbox: families, couples, friends, digital nomads. The same hotel adapts to different ways of travelling without losing personality.

The location is also worth highlighting. From Casa Peregrino you can walk to the main beach in under five minutes, to most of the recommended restaurants in fifteen, and to the dock where the excursions leave in twenty. Holbox itself is small enough that you barely need a transport: a golf cart for the day is enough if you want to explore the further beaches, but for the centre everything is comfortably walkable.

One of the things that makes this hotel work is how it integrates with what you actually want to do on the island. The team helps you book excursions, recommends restaurants based on your preferences, and gives you honest information when something is overrated or under-promoted. The combination of comfortable rooms, useful service and a great breakfast right below makes Casa Peregrino a genuinely complete base for a few days on the island.

The rooftop, the suite, the balcony, the breakfast at Clandestino, the silence of the early mornings, the staff who knew our names by the second day. All of these small pieces added up to a stay that exceeded what we expected from a boutique hotel in this part of Mexico, and it is the main reason we would recommend Casa Peregrino without hesitation.

For groups of friends or couples planning a few days in Holbox, the combination of location, comfort and personality is hard to beat. The hotel is the kind of place that stops being a hotel and starts being part of the trip, which is exactly what you want from this style of accommodation.

Our Experience at Hotel Casa Peregrino

Holbox, Mexico

Our experience: what we took away from Casa Peregrino

We have stayed in many beautiful places, but Casa Peregrino has something extra. That extra is not something you can buy or design: it is felt. From the welcome to the last coffee at Clandestino, the stay had a natural flow that you rarely find in hotels of this category.

It is one of those hotels where the small details make the difference: the team genuinely cares, the breakfast is one of the best in Holbox, the rooftop becomes your favourite spot of the day, and the rooms are exactly the right balance between comfortable and characterful.

If you are planning a trip to Holbox and you are looking for accommodation that lifts the whole trip, Casa Peregrino is a strong recommendation. The combination of location, design, service and the café below makes it one of the best places to stay on the island. Worth booking in advance, especially during the high season.
