Best time to dive in Kuramathi

The dry season, of December to April It brings clearer waters and a calmer sea.

However, you can also enjoy it during the other months. good visibility and surprising sightings.

Essential dive sites

Around Kuramathi and the Rasdhoo Atoll, you will find reefs and channels packed with sharks, manta rays and coral. Notable dive sites include Blanket Block and Madivaru, both known for their marine diversity. The short boat transfers also allow you to fit in two or three dives a day with very little downtime, which makes the most of every day you spend on the island.

And if you’d love to dive without heading back to land each night, here’s what living aboard is like on our Maldives liveaboard.

Kuramathi Island stands out not only for its diving

People who visit Kuramathi enjoy not just excellent dives, but also an island with serious natural beauty. Kuramathi Island, located in the Rasdhoo Atoll, is one of the most popular destinations in the Maldives thanks to its lush vegetation, the white sand of its beaches and the clear water of its lagoon. The island is around 1.8 km long and 500 metres wide, with a sandbank at the western end that stretches into the sea and gives the place one of its most photographed spots. If you’re just starting to plan your trip, we make it easy in our Maldives 7-day itinerary, island by island.

The atmosphere is calm and the island is well laid out: paths between palms, several beachfront restaurants, a couple of pools and a spa right next to the dive centre. Even with the resort capacity, it rarely feels crowded.

Wildlife on the island is part of the appeal. Fruit bats fly overhead at sunset, herons and reef egrets walk along the shore, and the lagoon gives you direct access to snorkel from the beach. Several house reefs are reachable just by wading in, which means you do not always need the boat to see something interesting.

Kuramathi works equally well for couples, families and divers travelling solo. For divers in particular, the proximity of the dive centre to the cabins is a real advantage: you wake up, walk five minutes, and you are already at the briefing. And if diving straight from your own island tempts you, you’ll also love Kandolhu, another diving resort in the Maldives that blew us away.

Kuramathi Dive Club: a base with a long history

Kuramathi Dive Club guarantees journeys, quality equipment, and marine diversity on every dive.

The Kuramathi Dive Club (Rasdhoo Divers dive centre) has been operating in Kuramathi since 1994 and is known for its professionalism, its safety standards and its personal service. It is under Anglo-Austrian management, with a multilingual team of instructors and divemasters who speak English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

The centre is equipped with several modern boats that allow for short transfers to all the main dive sites in the area, and the rental gear is in excellent condition. Briefings are clear and detailed, with depth maps drawn on a whiteboard before each dive. The groups are kept small, which makes a real difference in how the dive flows. And if you’d like a more budget-friendly base that doesn’t depend on staying at a resort, take a look at diving in Maafushi.

center organization

You can check the weekly dive schedule on large whiteboards, organised by day and time. The rental equipment (BCDs, regulators, wetsuits and everything else) is renewed regularly and checked between dives. We particularly appreciated the condition of the gear and the care given to maintenance, which is not always the case in dive centres around the Maldives.

The boats are spacious, with covered areas, fresh water for rinsing cameras between dives, fresh fruit and water, and a flexible setup that adapts to the group. The whole operation feels professional from start to finish: from the moment you arrive at the briefing to the moment you step off the boat after a dive, every detail is taken care of.

The dive sites covered by Kuramathi Dive Club in the Rasdhoo Atoll include both shallow reef dives and more challenging channel and thila dives. There is a real variety, from cleaning stations for manta rays to fast drift dives with sharks. The instructors know the sites well and adapt the plan to the conditions of the day, so you get the best out of every dive.

The best diving site near Kuramathi and Rasdhoo

Shark Point (Madivaru Reef)

Madivaru is one of the most iconic dive sites in the Rasdhoo Atoll, around eight minutes by boat from Kuramathi. Known for its strong marine diversity, the waters here host reef sharks, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasses and the occasional hammerhead during the season. Visibility is consistently good and the topography of the site (a wall with overhangs and small caves) makes it visually rich on top of the wildlife.

Our experience

We dropped into Madivaru Corner and were immediately struck by the current, which was pulling schools of fish across every angle of the dive. Visibility was over 25 metres, which gave us plenty of time to photograph turtles and the sharks that patrol the area. During the dive we counted at least three grey reef sharks circling, a school of yellow snappers that did not move, and a Napoleon wrasse that came right up to us out of curiosity. The current makes this a slightly more demanding dive, but the reward in terms of wildlife is one of the highest in the atoll.

Anecdotes that make a difference

our divemasters Ilaria and Guillem (Will)

Our divemasters showed real passion and professionalism throughout the week:

Training and patience. Before each dive, they did a thorough safety check and went through the basic signals, the maximum depth and the considerations around the current. Even after several dives together, the briefings never felt rushed or routine.

In-water guidance. Once underwater, they paid attention to the group without crowding anyone. They pointed out species we would have missed on our own, kept the pace appropriate for the experience level of each diver, and managed the buddy pairings well.

Post-dive. Back on the boat, they took the time to confirm what we saw, share local knowledge about the species we encountered, and adjust the next dive based on conditions and group preferences. A genuinely capable team.

Is Kuramathi Dive Club a good dive center?

The honest answer is yes. Kuramathi Dive Club (Rasdhoo Divers) in Kuramathi has everything in place for safe, well-organised and genuinely exciting diving. With a history dating back to 1994, they offer SSI or PADI courses adapted both to beginners and to experienced divers. Their dive sites cover the full range of what the Rasdhoo Atoll has to offer, from cleaning stations for manta rays to fast channels with reef sharks.

What stood out to us was the consistency of the operation across a full week of diving. Briefings were clear and detailed, equipment was well-maintained, the boats were modern and comfortable, and the multilingual team made the briefings accessible to a mixed international group. Free Nitrox is a strong addition for anyone planning multiple dives a day.

If you are choosing between dive operations in the Maldives, Kuramathi diving at the Kuramathi Dive Club is a strong recommendation. The combination of dive site quality, instructor experience and the comfort of the boat operation makes this one of the best dive centres in the country, and it is easy to see why it has won the award for best dive centre in the Maldives.
